In the Lab. of AI and Robotics (LAIR), our research area mainly focuses on how to bridge the gap between the artificial intelligence (AI) and the robotics, which is essential for building the 4th generation industry. The AI based on statistics mainly aims at processing a large amount of static data; robotics simply exploits those techniques without any considerations of the difference between the testing environments of AI and robotics. Therefore, there exists a limitation to utilize the AI robots in a new environment in real-time. 

In our lab, we let AI robots be specialized in new environments by actively learning through the robot mobility, and more efficient simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) and robot navigation techniques can be acquired based on the previous environment-specific perception, simultaneously. We therefore develop technologies that can complement each other with perceptional intelligence and mobility, ultimately aiming to develop an adaptive AI robot that can be actively used in a new environment. For the smart home, smart factory, and smart city which are essential for the future generations, Human-robot interaction is essential. Since this interaction will be needed by anyone, anywhere in the world in the future, the next-generation AI robot must ultimately be able to adapt to each environment of use, even if it is the same model which has the same learning algorithm and hardware. To this end, our laboratory studies the development of adaptive AI robots, based on probabilistic deep learning and environmental perception intelligence, and SLAM and navigation.
